President's Report

As we head towards June and our Summer break from ASPE, I would like to take a moment and look back at the past year and what we have been able to accomplish.  We have had great attendance at meetings this year and continue to see new faces and chapter membership grow.  Thanks to all the members for their continued engagement and support.  I specifically would like to take a moment to recognize the Chapter Board of Directors who have come together and contributed to the success of this organization.

Some of the highlights from this past year include:

  • ·         Annual Cornhole Event
  • ·         Celebrated our 25th Anniversary!!!
  • ·         Pickleball Event
  • ·         Established WOA program and supported and participated in Breast Cancer Walk
  • ·         Established AYP and ran events
  • ·         Established a monthly Newsletter
  • ·         Continued to grow chapter membership and moved from Chapter Category B to C and gained one delegate for National Convention.
  • ·         Held Monthly BOD meetings
  • ·         Held combined meeting with NFSA

Mm

MmMyself and the VP of Tech recently attended the Region 1 President's Meeting hosted by the Baltimore Chapter in Annapolis, MD.  We had great conversations with other Region 1 chapters and have gotten many great ideas.  I am so extremely excited to announce that CT will be hosting the 2027 ASPE Region 1 Presidents Meeting June 4-6, 2027!!  This will be a big event for our chapter and will need a lot of planning.  We will be reaching out to the Membership to form a committee in the near future.

Registration is open for the ASPE Convention in Oklahoma City.  If you are planning on attending, please use this link https://expo.aspe.org/.  Note that Early Bird registration ends on July 27, 2026.

Registration is open for the June Chapter Meeting which will be held at SBC in Milford.  Please note the day change – we will be meeting on Thursday June 18, 2026.  So please make sure you mark that in your calendar – if you show up on Wednesday, we won’t be there.  Hoping that we get to see some new faces or those who we have not seen in a while.

Lastly, as a reminder that we have early bird registration set for both your benefit and those planning our meetings.  We need to have numbers to the restaurant for food to be prepared, so stop waiting until the last minute – Please.

We are off for the months of July and August but are planning on an AYP Event over the summer so please keep an eye out for the announcement.   We will be back in September with a busy couple of months.  Our Cornhole Tournament is tentatively scheduled for September 19, 2026  and October several members will be traveling to Oklahoma City for the ASPE National Convention.

The BOD will continue to meet over the summer months to plan for the fall activities so if anyone has anything that needs to be addressed do not hesitate to reach out.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer and get the deserved downtime that you all deserve.

As always if anyone has any questions, concerns, ideas or just wants to talk plumbing please feel free to reach out.

 Regards,

 Jonathan (Jay) Kurtz, CPD

Technical News

June Technical Meeting Recap

The June technical meeting featured an informative presentation by Nick Lane of Watts Water Technologies on How to Prepare for the 2026 DOE Commercial Water Heater Efficiency Changes.

Nick provided attendees with a comprehensive overview of the new United States Department of Energy> (DOE) commercial water heater efficiency standards, which take effect on October 6, 2026, and discussed how these changes will significantly impact equipment selection, system design, installation, and long-term planning for commercial facilities. The presentation explained the intent behind the updated efficiency requirements.

The session explored the practical implications for consulting engineers, contractors, facility managers, and building owners, including changes to equipment footprints, utility requirements, venting considerations, and mechanical room layouts that may accompany higher-efficiency water heating technologies. Nick emphasized the importance of planning projects well in advance of the compliance date to avoid costly redesigns, procurement challenges, and project delays. He also discussed strategies for evaluating existing installations and selecting replacement equipment that will provide a smooth transition to the new requirements while maintaining reliable system performance.

The presentation was both timely and highly valuable, providing attendees with actionable information to help prepare for one of the most significant changes to commercial water heating equipment in recent years. The meeting drew a record-high attendance of approximately 40 members and guests, reflecting the industry's strong interest in the upcoming DOE regulations. Attendees remained engaged throughout the presentation and participated in an excellent discussion during the Q&A session.

A sincere thank you to Nick Lane for an outstanding presentation and to Watts Water Technologies for generously sponsoring the bar tab for the evening.

Stay tuned for additional information on the 6th Annual CT ASPE Cornhole Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, September 19th at Falcon Field. We look forward to another great opportunity for networking and friendly competition!
